Portugal is currently in last place in the group standings with two points after suffering a 28-8 loss to Wales in the first game of group play before playing to an 18-18 draw against Georgia in the second game. Georgia started off the scoring and kept it rolling to take a 13-0 lead before Portugal got on the board. Raffaele Storti scored the first try for Portugal to cut Georgia's lead and another 13 points were spread between Storti and Samuel Marques to earn two points toward the team's point total in the standings.

Australia is currently right in the middle of the Pool C standings with six points after playing to a 35-15 win against Georgia in the first game of pool play and losing the next two with a 22-15 loss to Fiji and a 40-6 loss against Wales in the team's last match. Ben Donaldson scored the six points against Wales with two tries in the ninth and 14th minutes, but Wales pulled away after that and the Aussies were unable to get back in the game.
This will be the first meeting between these two nations.
